The Bucks Girls Football League was formed in July 2003 to provide football for girls on a regular basis. The league has been supported by the Bucks & Milton Keynes County Sports Partnership, (formerly known as Active Sports Bucks) a Sport England initiative to provide football for girls aged 8 -16.
Why play football?
Many parents of girls do not consider football as an activity- but it is the most popular female sport.
Fitness - a great way to keep girls in shape.
Friends - a great way for girls to meet different friends with a common interest.
Team work - learning to play in a team, support team mates, lead team mates and communicate with team mates is a fantastic skill to develop. Many dont start team sports to secondary school, but if they start at Primary school they will develop their skills far more quickly.
Focus - gaining an early love of sport will enthuse them throughout their life and give them a focus through their teenage years, a release from their studies, and the disipline to set goals & achieve goals.
Bucks & Milton Keynes Sports Partnership gave girls the opportunity to start playing football within Kick Start / 3 Lions courses, which are linked to local clubs or form new girl’s teams. Team numbers have increased dramatically, from 6 to 70 teams, and provide a pathway to senior womens football in the TVCWFL which is the 1st step of the women’s football pyramid for teams in Berks, Bucks & Oxon - all adult female teams within these counties have to start their journey here.
In 2008, after meetings with BGFL, MKDJ7, MK Borders Counties and local MK teams, it was agreed that Milton Keynes Girls teams and volunteers would join the BGFL on mass to help develop a stronger league structure, with a northern division within BGFL to help the MK girls sections to grow. The league grew significantly in the early years, recently numbers have steadied but a strong enthusiastic committee, work hard to maintain the leagues Football ethos, provide flexible football.
The new youth football review has already been implemented in the girls league for the past 5 years, where possible we split the league geographically to reduce travelling, play 9 a side to support the teams who are struggling for numbers.
This year we are piloting some ability split leagues (U11, U13, U15) after the geographically split leagues have concluded. As a Charter Standard League we are also keen to support other local leagues, this year we are working with the Beds FA to support any of their teams that require competition, and the OMGFL.
The League cup which is run in various formats depending on the number of teams per age band, is run county wide to give teams more exposure with the finals being held at Stadium:MK in May or at Chesham United.
